To help utility workers do their jobs as productively and safely as possible, FirstPower has developed a tool and fluid combination that has revolutionized disconnect switch operation.

Proven in field operations, the Stinger® System is engineered to improve electric utility disconnect switching productivity. Switching productivity, also known as "same day switching," is achieved when a switch can be opened without breaking as a reasonable force is applied. The Stinger® is not only safe, but highly effective for opening switches without down time.

An electric utility conducted independent ergonomic testing of the Stinger® System. Results of the testing showed that pre-treating a switch using the Stinger® and 1FR™ Penetrating Fluid will:

  • Reduce the amount of force required to open a switch significantly, sometimes by 50%
  • Reduce peak muscle exertion of workers by over 50%

What is the Stinger® System, and How Does it Work?

The Stinger® System greatly improves switch productivity and worker safety, but how exactly?  The Stinger® System includes the Stinger® tool with wireless remote operation, 1FR™ Penetrating Fluid and camera for close-up viewing when treating the switch.

The Stinger® tool is constructed of durable dielectric plastic, which passes ASTM F7-12 standard for plastic line guard equipment. It has no exposed conductive or metal parts, preventing flashovers from the switch to the tool. It has been Hi-Pot tested to 250 kV. The Stinger® tool features remote, wireless “no-rope” and “no-lever” operation, making it safer than other alternatives with ropes and levers that can get dirty or wet. The Stinger® attaches to hot sticks with a universal connector. All aerosol cans with fluids for the Stinger® are threaded and designed to attach only to the Stinger® tool. This prevents the use of unapproved materials that can be hazardous to both equipment and workers.

1FR™ Penetrating Fluid is designed specifically to remove corrosion, rust and old dielectric grease from disconnect switches. 1FR™ uses CO2 as a propellant, is non-conductive, non-flammable and arc-quenching. It works to dissolve and remove hardened corrosion, rust and worn out dried grease deposits that inhibit switch movement. Extensive field testing by electric utilities proves that full switch operation may be achieved in as little as 30-minutes when pre-treating switch parts.
